Cleveland Abbe
Cleveland Abbe (December 3, 1838 – October 28, 1916) was an American meteorologist and advocate of time zones. While director of the Cincinnati Observatory in Cincinnati, Ohio, he developed a system of telegraphic weather reports, daily weather maps, and weather forecasts. Congress in 1870 established the U.S. Weather Bureau and inaugurated the use of daily weather forecasts. In recognition of his work, Abbe, who was often known as Old Probability for the reliability of his forecasts, was appointed the first head of the new service.

Cleveland Abbe

Cleveland Abbe
Cleveland Abbe, född 3 december 1838 i New York, död 29 december 1916 i Chevy Chase, Maryland, var en amerikansk meteorolog och astronom, ansedd som den egentlige skaparen av USA:s vädertjänst.

Cleveland Abbe
Discendente di una ricca famiglia della città di New York, dimostrò fin da giovane una particolare attitudine per la matematica.
A seguito della Guerra di secessione americana, Abbe aderì al movimento unionista del nord, trasferendosi successivamente a Cambridge, nel Massachussets, dove divenne assistente di Benjamin Gould. Direttore dell'Osservatorio di Cincinnati dal 1868 e docente di meteorologia all' Università di Washington. Fu il fondatore del servizio meteorologico statunitense, e ideatore di una teoria per la previsione del tempo.

Cleveland Abbe
Cleveland Abbe (New York, 3 december 1838 — Washington, 29 december 1916) was een Amerikaans meteoroloog en sterrenkundige, directeur van het observatorium van Cincinnati en vervolgens professor in de meteorologie aan de universiteit van Washington.
Hij leidde verscheidene expedities ivm. het waarnemen van eclipsen. Zijn bekendheid dankt hij voornamelijk aan het oprichten van weerkundige diensten in de VS en aan het uitwerken van een theorie over de weersvoorspelling.
