Classical Antiquity

Classical antiquity (also the classical era or classical period) is a broad term for a long period of cultural history centered on the Mediterranean Sea, comprising the interlocking civilizations of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. It is conventionally taken to begin with the earliest-recorded Greek poetry of Homer (8th–7th century BC), and continues through the rise of  Christianity and the decline of the Roman Empire (5th century). It ends with the dissolution of classical culture at the close of Late Antiquity (AD 300-600), blending into the Early Middle Ages (AD 500-1000).

Le terme Antiquité classique s'oppose à Antiquité tardive et renvoie à l'héritage de la civilisation gréco-romaine. Il est surtout employé dans les découpes historiques relatives à l'historiographie anglo-saxonne (historiens anglais et étatsuniens, etc.) pour décrire l'Antiquité.

Der Begriff Antike (von lateinisch antiquus, deutsch: alt, altertümlich) bezeichnet die Epoche des Altertums im Mittelmeerraum. Sie reicht etwa von 1200 v. Chr. bzw. 800 v. Chr. bis ca. 600 n. Chr. und unterscheidet sich von vorhergehenden und nachfolgenden Epochen durch gemeinsame und durchgängige kulturelle Traditionen.

De klassieke oudheid is een naam van een periode die uitsluitend gebruikt wordt in de periodisering van de westerse geschiedenis. Gewoonlijk laat men deze periode rond 500 voor Christus beginnen en rond 300 of 400 na Christus eindigen. Centraal staat daarbij de geschiedenis van Hellas en Rome. De klassieke oudheid wordt gevolgd door de middeleeuwen. Sommige historici gebruiken voor de overgangstijd tussen oudheid en middeleeuwen de term late oudheid, die dan tot ongeveer 600 duurt.

O termo Antiguidade Clássica refere-se a um longo período da História da Europa que se estende aproximadamente do século VIII a.C., com o surgimento da poesia grega de Homero, à queda do Império romano do ocidente no século V d.C., mais precisamente no ano 476. No eixo conductor desta época, que a diferença de outras anteriores ou posteriores, estão os factores culturais das suas civilizações mais marcantes, a Grécia e a Roma antigas.
