Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineering is the oldest engineering discipline after military engineering, and it was defined to distinguish non-military engineering from military engineering. It is traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines including environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, municipal or urban engineering, water resources engineering, materials engineering, coastal engineering, surveying, and construction engineering. Civil engineering takes place on all levels: in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.

Das Bauingenieurwesen ist eine Ingenieurwissenschaft, die sich mit der Konzeption, Planung, Konstruktion, Berechnung, Herstellung und dem Betrieb von Bauwerken des Hoch-, Tief- und Wasserbaus auseinandersetzt. In diesem Zusammenhang werden ebenfalls Fragen des technischen Umweltschutzes, beispielsweise lärmtechnische und Schadstoffuntersuchungen, behandelt.

Le Génie civil représente l'ensemble des techniques concernant les constructions civiles. Les ingénieurs civils s’occupent de la conception, de la réalisation, de l’exploitation et de la réhabilitation d’ouvrages de construction et d’infrastructures urbaines dont ils assurent la gestion afin de répondre aux besoins de la société, tout en assurant la sécurité du public et la protection de l’environnement. Très variées, leurs réalisations se répartissent principalement dans cinq grands domaines d’intervention: structures, géotechnique, hydraulique, transport, et environnement.

Väg- och vattenbyggnad, alternativt väg- och vattenbyggnadsteknik eller förr väg- och vattenbyggnadskonst, betecknar ett tekniskt område, men är framför allt den traditionella beteckningen på i princip all civilingenjörsutbildning med bygginriktning i Sverige. Civilingenjörsutbildningen ges under detta namn vid Chalmers tekniska högskola, Luleå tekniska universitet (LTU) och Lunds tekniska högskola (vid Lunds universitet). Vid Kungliga Tekniska högskolan (KTH) finns byggnadstekniska inriktningar inom civilingenjörsutbildningen Samhällsbyggnad, vid LTU även inom utbildningarna Arkitektur och Naturresursteknik och vid Mälardalens högskola (MDH) inom utbildningen Samhällsteknik.
