Church Fathers

The Church Fathers, Early Church Fathers, or Fathers of the Church are the early and influential theologians and writers in the Christian Church, particularly those of the first five centuries of Christian history. The term is used of writers and teachers of the Church, not necessarily saints. It is generally not meant to include the New Testament authors, though in the early Church some writing of Church Fathers were considered canonical. Those fathers who wrote in Latin are called the Latin (Church) Fathers, and those who wrote in Greek the Greek (Church) Fathers. Famous Latin Fathers include the Montanist Tertullian, St. Gregory the Great, St. Augustine of Hippo, St. Ambrose of Milan, and St. Jerome; famous Greek Fathers include St. Irenaeus of Lyons (whose work has survived only in Latin translation), Clement of Alexandria, the heterodox Origen, St. Athanasius of Alexandria, St. John Chrysostom, and the Three Cappadocian Fathers.

Depuis le , l'historiographie moderne appelle Pères de l'Église les personnalités, généralement des évêques, dont les écrits, les actes et l'exemple moral ont contribué à établir et à défendre la doctrine chrétienne. Ce sont donc des personnages qui se recommandent par quatre caractéristiques ou 'notes' : 1° l'ancienneté, 2° la sainteté, 3° l'orthodoxie 4°l'approbation ecclésiastique.

Ojcowie Kościoła (łac. Patres) byli to pisarze i teologowie we wczesnym chrześcijaństwie (do VIII wieku). Nauka starożytnych i wczesnośredniowiecznych Ojców Kościoła, a także dział teologii zajmujący się ich nauczaniem, nazywa się patrystyką.Pojęcie to w starożytności chrześcijańskiej miało sens przenośny. W Liście do Koryntian (1 Kor. 4,15) pisze św. Paweł: Bo choćbyście mieli dziesięć tysięcy wychowawców w Chrystusie, to ojców macie niewielu. Dokładniej wyjaśnił to św. Ireneusz: Jeśli ktoś jest pouczony słowem przez drugiego, to nazywa się go synem, a tamtego ojcem. Było to więc popularne w starożytności utożsamianie ojcostwa duchowego z nauczaniem. W przekonaniu pierwszych chrześcijan biskup był nauczycielem zasad wiary, stąd jemu przede wszystkim przysługiwał ten zaszczytny tytuł. Później określano nim wyróżniających się świadków Tradycji.

Padre della Chiesa è un titolo che a partire dal IV secolo la Chiesa Cattolica antica ha attribuito ad alcuni scrittori di materia religiosa, il cui insegnamento e la cui dottrina erano ritenuti fondamenti della retta tradizione e della fede nella Chiesa. I loro scritti, che formano la cosiddetta letteratura patristica, sintetizzano la dottrina quale emerge dalla Bibbia, specialmente dai Vangeli, dagli scritti degli Apostoli, dai pronunciamenti della Chiesa e dalle decisioni dei concili, fornendo un compendio omogeneo di insegnamenti da trasmettere alle generazioni cristiane successive.
