Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus (1451 –  May 20, 1506) was a navigator, colonizer and one of the first Europeans to explore the Americas after the Vikings. Though not the first to reach the Americas from Europe, Columbus' voyages led to general European awareness of the hemisphere and the successful establishment of European cultures in the New World. It is generally believed that he was born in Genoa, although other theories exist. The name Christopher Columbus is the Anglicization of the Latin Christophorus Columbus. Also well known are his name's rendering in modern Italian as Cristoforo Colombo and in Spanish as Cristóbal Colón.

Christophe Colomb (né en 1451 à Gênes — mort le 20 mai 1506 à Valladolid, Espagne), est le premier européen de l'histoire moderne à traverser l'océan Atlantique en découvrant une route aller-retour entre le continent américain et l'Europe. Il effectue en tout quatre voyages en tant que navigateur au service des Rois catholiques espagnols Isabelle de Castille et Ferdinand d'Aragon, qui le nomment avant son premier départ amiral, vice-roi des Indes et gouverneur général des îles et terre ferme qu'il découvrirait. La découverte de l'espace caraïbe marque le début de la colonisation de l'Amérique par les européens et fait de Colomb un acteur majeur des Grandes Découvertes des et , considérées comme l'étape majeure entre le Moyen Âge et les temps modernes.

Krzysztof Kolumb, kat. Cristòfor Colom, wł. Cristoforo Colombo, hiszp. Cristóbal Colón (ur. 25 sierpnia lub 31 października 1451 w Genui, zm. 20 maja 1506 w Valladolid) – europejski żeglarz i nawigator (tradycyjnie uważany za Genueńczyka, według najnowszych odkryć prawdopodobnie Katalończyk).Kapitan wyprawy, która płynęła na trzech okrętach Santa María, Niña i Pinta pod flagą Kastylii w poszukiwaniu zachodniej drogi morskiej do Indii. Jako pierwsza w historii nowożytnych odkryć geograficznych pokonała zwrotnikowy Ocean Atlantycki i 12 października 1492 dotarła do Indii Zachodnich (Antyli) u wybrzeży Ameryki - kontynentu nieznanego w ówczesnej Europie. Mianowany został za dokonania admirałem i pierwszym namiestnikiem hiszpańskich kolonii w Ameryce Środkowej, organizator i kapitan czterech odkrywczych wypraw transatlantyckich z Hiszpanii do Ameryki.
