Christiaan Huygens

Christiaan Huygens (pronounced in English (IPA): ; in Dutch: ) (April 14, 1629 –  July 8, 1695), was a Dutch mathematician, astronomer and physicist; born in The Hague as the son of Constantijn Huygens. He studied law and mathematics at the University of Leiden and the College of Orange in Breda before turning to science. Historians commonly associate Huygens with the scientific revolution.

Huygens studiò giurisprudenza e matematica all'Università di Leida dal 1645 al 1647 e successivamente al College van Oranje (Collegio d'Orange) di Breda.Huygens preparò le fondamenta del calcolo infinitesimale (poi sviluppato da Leibniz e Newton) nei suoi lavori sui coni, ma soprattutto è famoso per il suo ragionamento che la luce consistesse di onde. Nel 1655, adoperando un telescopio di propria fabbricazione, scoprì la luna di Saturno, Titano. Esaminò gli anelli di Saturno a fondo e nel 1656 scoprì che consistevano di rocce. Nello stesso anno osservò la Nebulosa di Orione. Grazie al suo telescopio fu in grado di suddividere la nebulosa in singole stelle. La regione interna più chiara della Nebulosa di Orione è chiamata Regione di Huygens in onore di questo lavoro.
