Kolesterol
Kolesterol, hayvanların vücut dokularındaki hücre zarlarında bulunan ve kan plazmasında taşınan bir sterol, yani bir steroid ve alkol birleşimidir. Daha düşük miktarlarda bitkilerde de bulunur. İlk defa 1754'te safra taşlarında kolesterol bulunduğu için bu maddenin ismi Yunanca chole- (safra) ve steros (katı) sözcükleri ile kimyadaki -ol ekinden türetilmiştir.
