The youngest player in the Romanian squad of Euro 2000 made his international debut in August 1999 in a 2-2 draw against Cyprus. Previously, he won 20 under-21 caps. He was snapped up by Ajax in August 1999, and played 21 matches in his first season with the Amsterdam club. He previously played for home-town club CSM Resita and FC Universitatea Craiova in Romania. Scored Romania's Euro 2000 first goal vs England to give them his first triumph ever in an Euro Cup.
