| |}Chinese astrology is the divination of the future from the Chinese calendar, which is based on astronomy, and ancient Chinese philosophy. In particular, it is based on the sexagenary cycle of 60 years that has been documented since the time of the Shang Dynasty at the latest. This basic cycle has been constructed from two cycles: the 10 heavenly stems (the five elements in their yin and yang forms) and the 12 earthly branches, or the 12-year cycle of animals referred to as the Chinese zodiac. The Chinese animal zodiac also operates on a cycle of months or 'moons' and of hours of the day.

L'astrologie chinoise (zhanxingshu , xingxue , qizhengsiyu , guolaoxingzong ) est fondée sur les notions astronomiques, religieuses et calendériques traditionnelles. Au cours du , ses 12 animaux -signes (生肖 shengxiao) ont été adoptés dans la culture populaire de nombreux pays. Die chinesische Astrologie (chin. 占星術 zhānxīngshù = Kunst des Sternenwahrsagens) steht in engem Zusammenhang mit der chinesischen Naturphilosophie und dem chinesischen Kalender, besonders die im Zwölfjahresrhythmus wechselnden Tierkreiszeichen (Zodiak), die keine Beziehung zum westlichen Tierkreis haben. Die alten chinesischen Astronomen benannten die fünf ihnen bekannten Planeten nach den fünf Elementen. Die Venus heißt Metallstern, Jupiter Holzstern, Merkur Wasserstern, Mars Feuerstern und Saturn Erdstern. Diese Bezeichnungen finden sich heute noch in den japanischen und koreanischen Namen für die Wochentage. Die 28 Sternbilder xiù 宿 unterscheiden sich grundliegend von den 88 Sternbildern des Abendlandes. So heißt das Sternbild des Großen Bären (Ursa Major) 斗 dǒu = Schöpfkelle.

Zodiak chiński podobnie jak zodiak europejski składa się z 12 znaków. Jednak w przeciwieństwie do zachodniego, cały cykl dzieli się nie tylko na miesiące, ale także 12 lat oraz 12 podwójnych godzin doby. Co więcej, lata również są notowane w cyklu dwunastostopniowym w oparciu o ruch Jowisza. Do oznaczania poszczególnych części cyklu używa się Ziemskich gałęzi.

Alla base di questo sistema c'è un ciclo di durante cui ciascuno dei 12 segni animali si combina con uno dei 5 elementi essenziali e primitivi, completandosi quindi in 12x5=60 anni.
