Shar Pei
The Shar Pei is a breed of dog that originated in China and has the distinctive features of deep wrinkles and a blue-black tongue. The name (沙皮, pinyin: shā pí; English name probably derived from British spelling of Cantonese equivalent sā pèih) translates to "sand skin," and refers to the texture of its short, rough coat. As puppies, Shar Pei have lots of wrinkles, but as they mature, the wrinkles disappear as they "grow into their skin". Shar pei's were once named as one of the world's rarest dog breeds by Time magazine and the Guinness Book of World Records, and the American Kennel Club did not recognize the breed until 1991.

Height: 18-20 inches.
Weight: 35-55 lbs.
Life Span: 8-12 yrs.
Breed Group: Northern
Overview
The independent and sometimes stubborn shar-pei is devoted to its family, protective of its territory, and wary of human and animal strangers. Socialization and obedience classes at an early age are a must. The shar-pei does best with respectful children at least five years old. Confrontations with other animals can be a problem.
Appearance
The coat may be one of three lengths: horse (under 1/2 inch long), brush (1/2 to one inch long), or bear (over one inch long). The coat is usually cream, fawn, red, or black, and the tongue either bluish-black or lavender (in light-coated dogs). The loose skin, small ears, thick rounded muzzle, and curled high-set tail are also distinctive.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
Brush weekly to prevent skin infections, and examine skin folds and between digits regularly. The shar-pei needs daily brisk walks on a leash or a run in a secured area.
Origins
The shar-pei originated in China over 2,000 years ago and was bred for hunting and dogfighting. Its thick, loose skin made it virtually impervious to an attacker's sharp teeth and claws, allowing the shar-pei to bite even while being bitten.
Special Alerts
The Chinese shar-pei is not suitable for inexperienced dog owners. Breed-related health concerns: entropion, skin and ear infections, atopy, patellar luxation, hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism.
