Chinese Crested

The Chinese Crested Dog is a smaller (10-13 lbs) breed of dog known for its unusual appearance and entertaining personality. It is a member of the toy dog group. Two types can be born in the same litter; the Hairless and the Powderpuff.

Overview
This elegant, graceful dog is friendly to everyone, especially if socialized early with people and other animals, and does well in obedience training.
The Chinese crested is more comfortable with gentle children over five years old than with younger children. This is a fine dog for first-time dog owners and for city and apartment dwellers.
Appearance
The hairless variety has hair on the head (crest), tail (called a plume), and on the feet from the toes to the "wrists" on the front legs and up to the "ankles" on the hindlegs (called socks).
The coat texture is soft and silky. The powder puff variety is completely covered with a double coat, which consists of a soft undercoat and coarser guard hairs. The Chinese crested is seen in all colors. The powder puffs are often particolor (white with patches of gray, tan, or black). The hairless usually have gray skin with pink patches; the fringe can be a variety of colors.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
The hairless Chinese crested needs only some minor combing on the crest, plume, and socks. The powder puff should be combed and brushed a few times a week.
This breed appreciates a few leisurely walks daily and expects to play with its owner indoors.
Origins
The Chinese crested, which probably dates back about 3,000 years, may not have originated in China but may have been brought to Asia by traders from Africa.
