Chief Justice of the United States

The Chief Justice of the United States is the head of the judicial branch of the government of the United States, and presides over the U.S. Supreme Court. The highest judicial officer in the country, the Chief Justice leads the business of the Supreme Court and presides over the Senate during impeachment trials of the President. In modern tradition, the Chief Justice also has the duty of administering the oath of office to the President, but this is not required by the Constitution or any other law.

Der Oberste Richter der Vereinigten Staaten (Chief Justice of the United States //) ist das nominelle Oberhaupt der US-Judikative auf Bundesebene. Seine Hauptaufgabe ist der Vorsitz am Obersten Gericht.Darüber hinaus hat er den Vorsitz bei Amtsenthebungsverfahren des Senats gegen den Präsidenten oder Vizepräsidenten (Impeachment) und steht der Gerichtskonferenz der Vereinigten Staaten (Judicial Conference) vor. Das Gesetz weist ihm auch verschiedene weitere administrative Aufgaben zu.Der Oberste Richter wird – wie alle Bundesrichter – vom Präsidenten vorgeschlagen. Einige Vorsitzende, wie  William Howard Taft oder John Roberts erhielten das Amt ohne frühere, andere wie etwa William H. Rehnquist nach vorangeganger Tätigkeit am Obersten Gerichtshof.

The Chief Justice of the United States) jest przewodniczącym Sądu Najwyszego i szefem władzy sądowniczej.Prezes SN jest mianowany przez prezydenta USA, ale musi być, jak inni sędziowie, zatwierdzony przez Senat USA. Nie musi przedtem zasiadać w SN (tak jak nie zasiadali w nim przed objęciem przewodnictwa m.in. John Glover Roberts czy Earl Warren). Jego kadencja jest dożywotnia, choć zawsze może ustąpić. John Marshall i Warren przedtem w ogóle nie byli sędziami.
