Chemical Abstracts

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) is a division of the American Chemical Society, and produces Chemical Abstracts, and related products. It is located in Columbus, Ohio, USA. CAS provides the largest databases of publicly disclosed chemistry-related information, makes them accessible through search and retrieval software and provides links to the original literature and patents. The term "Chemical Abstracts" is often used loosely to apply to all the different files and products, but the different parts now have specific names. In 2007 the Chemical Abstracts Service was designated an ACS National Historical Chemical Landmark in recognition of its significance as the most comprehensive repository of research in chemistry and related sciences.[1]

Der Chemical Abstracts Service (Abkürzung: CAS), ist eine 1907 gegründete Unterabteilung der American Chemical Society. Sein Publikationsorgan Chemical Abstracts (CA) hat zum Ziel, weltweit sämtliche Chemie-relevanten Veröffentlichungen zu indizieren und zusammenzufassen. Die CAS ist am bekanntesten für ihre enormen Datenbanken von chemischen Verbindungen (über 30 Millionen organische und anorganische Substanzen (Stand: Februar 2007)) und deren eindeutigem Schlüssel, der CAS Registry Number, auf Deutsch meist CAS-Nummer genannt. Die von CAS angebotenen Dienstleistungen und Produkte sind überwiegend kommerziell. Von Bedeutung für den recherchierenden Zugang zu den CAS- (und weiteren) Fach- und Patentdatenbanken ist STN (The Scientific & Technical Information Network).

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) - to największa na świecie chemiczna naukowa baza danych, będąca własnością American Chemical Society (ACS). CAS to także nazwa instytucji zajmującej się tworzeniem tej bazy danych.CAS powstała w 1907 r. w Columbus w stanie Ohio w USA, z inicjatywy kilkunastu członków ACS. Obecnie zatrudnia ona ok. 1000 pracowników oraz korzysta z usług kilkudziesięciu tysięcy współpracowników na całym świecie. Instytucja ta jest formalnie biorąc przedsiębiorstwem, które jest w 100% własnością ACS.

Geschiedenis In 1907 zag de Chemical-Abstract-Service (CAS) het licht om gepubliceerde chemische informatie te bundelen en te verspreiden. Dit instituut, verbonden aan de American Chemical Society, is gelocaliseerd in Columbus, Ohio, USA. Deze CAS bouwde voort op een aantal oudere, gelijkaardige pogingen (Chemisches Zentralblatt (1830), Bulletin de la Société Chimique de France (1863), Journal of the Chemical Society (1871), and the Review of American Chemical Research (1895)). Hierbij groeide de nood aan een ondubbelzinnige identificatie van chemische structuren zonder de dubbelzinnigheid die soms optreedt bij chemische nomenclatuur (zij het systematische, generische, commerciële of triviale nomenclatuur). Daartoe werd in 1965 werd het CAS-nummer (engl. CAS Registry Number)ingevoerd. Dit is een éénduidig getal dat ondubbelzinnig verwijst naar een stof, voor zover deze stof in het systeem is opgenomen.
