Charon (mythology)

In Greek mythology, Charon (in Greek, Χάρων — the bright) was the ferryman of Hades. He was the son of Erebus and Nyx, and twin brother of Thanatos. Charon took the newly dead from one side of the river Acheron (not Styx, as sometimes stated) to the other if they had an obolus to pay for the ride. Those who could not had to wander the banks of the Acheron for one hundred years. Corpses in some regions in ancient Greece were buried with a gold coin, called a aureus in their mouth to pay the fare.

Dans la mythologie grecque, Charon ou Caron (en grec ancien  / Khárôn), le « nocher des Enfers », était le fils d'Érèbe (les Ténèbres) et de Nyx (la Nuit). Il avait pour rôle de faire passer sur sa barque, moyennant un péage, les ombres errantes des défunts à travers le fleuve Achéron (ou selon d'autres sources, le Styx) vers le séjour des morts.

Charon (griech. Χάρων: „grimmiger Weißer“, etruskisch Charun) war in der griechischen Mythologie der düstere greise Ferge, welcher die Toten für einen Obolus (Münze) über den Totenfluss Acheron (häufig werden auch die Flüsse Lethe oder Styx genannt) setzte, damit sie ins Reich des Totengottes Hades gelangen konnten.

Charon (gr. ) – duch związany ze śmiercią występujący w mitologii greckiej i etruskiej. W mitologii greckiej: duch świata podziemnego, syn Erebu i Nyks. Był przewoźnikiem dusz zmarłych przez mityczną rzekę Styks. (W innych wersjach mitu Styks nazywa się Acheron i czasem jest jeziorem lub bagnem, co wynika z tego, że poszczególne państwa-miasta starożytnej Grecji różniły się nieco kulturą). Jego powinnością było przeprowadzenie ich przez bagniska tu na drugi brzeg rzeki zmarłych. Był to posępny starzec, bezwzględny i bezlitosny. Nikt żywy nie miał wstępu do jego łodzi (kilka razy zdarzyło się odstępstwo od tej zasady ale zawsze ponosił za to karę, np. za przewiezienie Heraklesa musiał spędzić rok zakuty w łańcuchy), podczas podróży dusze zmarłych musiały wiosłować, a Charon sterował łodzią. Za swe usługi pobierał opłatę – monetę o wartości 1 obola, dlatego zgodnie ze zwyczajem obowiązkiem rodziny było umieszczanie monety w ustach zmarłego. W sztuce przedstawia się Charona jako brodatego, siwego, szpetnego starca ubranego w strój niewolnika (z jednym rękawem) i okrągły kapelusz podróżny. Często stoi w łodzi z wiosłem.

Come psicopompo trasportava i nuovi morti da una riva all'altra del fiume Acheronte, ma solo se i loro cadaveri avevano ricevuto i rituali onori funebri (o, in un'altra versione, se disponevano di un obolo per pagare il viaggio); chi non li aveva ricevuti (o non aveva l'obolo) era costretto a errare tra le nebbie del fiume per cento anni.
