In computer and machine-based telecommunications terminology, a character is a unit of information that roughly corresponds to a grapheme, grapheme-like unit, or symbol, such as in an alphabet or syllabary in the written form of a natural language.An example of a character is a letter, numeral, or punctuation mark. The concept also includes control characters, which do not correspond to symbols in a particular natural language, but rather to other bits of information used to process text in one or more languages. Examples of control characters include carriage return or tab, as well as instructions to printers or other devices that display or otherwise process text.

En informatique, le caractère est un type de données. Comme en typographie, un caractère informatique peut représenter une lettre minuscule, une lettre majuscule, un chiffre ou un signe de ponctuation, mais aussi une espace typographique, une tabulation, un retour à la ligne et quelques autres opérations spéciales (sonnerie, effacement, etc.).

Typ znakowy – jeden z podstawowych typów danych w wielu językach programowania, mający na celu przechowywanie pojedynczego znaku tekstu.W językach C i C++ typ ten jest po prostu jednobajtową liczbę całkowitą (może być ona ze znakiem, w przypadku signed char; lub bez znaku, dla unsigned char; w przypadku nie podania kwalifikatora signed/unsigned rodzaj liczby zależy od implementacji). W Pascalu natomiast typ znakowy nie jest typem liczbowym (do konwersji używa się funkcji Chr lub Asc). Wewnętrznie jednak znak jest zawsze reprezentowany przez jego kod, w zależności od implementacji będzie to ASCII, EBCDIC, Unicode itp.

Nella terminologia informatica, un carattere è un unità minima di informazione che, semplificando, corrisponde a un grafema, o a un simbolo, della forma scritta di un linguaggio naturale.Esempi di carattere possono essere una lettera, un numero, o un segno di interpunzione. Il concetto include anche i caratteri di controllo, che non corrispondono a un segno del linguaggio naturale, ma sono necessari per processare un testo e gestire le periferiche di output (stampante, terminale, ecc...); tra questi ci sono, ad esempio Carriage return (invio), End of Text (fine del testo) o Bell (beep).
