Chalkis

Chalcis or Chalkida, Halkida, Halkis or Chalkis (Greek, Modern: Χαλκίδα IPA: , Ancient/Katharevousa: -ίς), the chief town of the island of Euboea in Greece,is situated on the strait of the Evripos at its narrowest point. The name is preserved from antiquity and is derived from the Greek (copper, bronze), though there is no trace of any mines in the area.

Chalcis (en grec ancien  / Khalkís, en grec moderne  Halkídha) est la principale ville de l'île d'Eubée et la capitale du nome du même nom, en Grèce, située sur le détroit de l'Euripe. Elle est le siège d'un archevêché.

Chalkida ( ), früher auch Chalkis genannt, ist die Verwaltungshauptstadt der griechischen Insel (und Präfektur) Euböa (Εύβοια, Évia).Chalkida liegt in der Mitte der Westküste an der schmalen Meeresstraße Euripos-Kanal, über die bereits seit 411 v. Chr. eine Brücke führte, die Chalkis mit dem Festland verband. Eine Besonderheit dieser Meeresenge besteht darin, dass das Meer, das unter der Brücke hinwegfließt, alle sechs Stunden seine Strömungsrichtung ändert.
