The central nervous system (CNS) is the part of the nervous system that integrates the information that it receives from, and coordinates the activity of, all parts of the bodies of bilaterian animals—that is, all multicellular animals except radially symmetric animals such as sponges and jellyfish. It contains the majority of the nervous system and consists of the brain and the spinal cord. Some classifications also include the retina and the cranial nerves in the CNS. Together with the peripheral nervous system, it has a fundamental role in the control of behavior. The CNS is contained within the dorsal cavity, with the brain in the cranial cavity and the spinal cord in the spinal cavity. In vertebrates, the brain is protected by the skull, while the spinal cord is protected by the vertebrae, and both are enclosed in the meninges.

Das Zentralnervensystem (ZNS oder CNS von engl.: Central Nervous System) ist ein Teilsystem des Nervensystems. Die Abgrenzung vom peripheren Nervensystem ist willkürlich, funktionell sind beide Anteile des Nervensystems eng miteinander verflochten. Strukturen und Steuerungen des ZNS werden als zentralnervös bezeichnet. Das ZNS erfüllt in einem komplexeren Lebewesen verschiedene Aufgaben:

• Integration aller sensiblen Reize, die ihm von innerhalb oder außerhalb des Organismus zugeleitet werden (sogenannte Afferenzen),
• Koordination sämtlicher motorischer Eigenleistungen des Gesamtorganismus
• Regulation aller dabei ablaufenden innerorganismischen Abstimmungsvorgänge zwischen den organismischen Subsystemen oder Organen, einschließlich solcher humoraler und insbesondere hormoneller Art.

Le système nerveux central (ou névraxe) est la partie du système nerveux entourée par les méninges et isolée biochimiquement du reste de l'organisme par la barrière hémato-encéphalique.

Centrala nervsystemet (CNS) består av hjärnan (encephalon) och ryggmärgen (medulla spinale). Tillsammans med det perifera nervsystemet (PNS) utgör det nervsystemet hos ryggradsdjuren, inklusive däggdjuren. Det centrala nervsystemet inhämtar information från det perifera nervsystemet och bearbetar denna för att därefter skicka ut relevanta nya signaler till kroppen. Även impulserna från det somatiska nervsystemet styrs till centrala nervsystemet.

Ośrodkowy układ nerwowy (OUN), inna nazwa to: centralny układ nerwowy (CUN) – jest to najważniejsza część  układu nerwowego kręgowców. Ośrodkowy układ nerwowy jest chroniony przez kości czaszki oraz kręgosłup. Zbudowany jest z istoty szarej i białej. Częścią składową istoty szarej są komórki nerwowe. Oprócz nich znajdują się włókna nerwowe rdzenne i bezrdzenne, tkanka glejowa i naczynia krwionośne wraz z paskami tkanki łącznej. Skład istoty białej to tkanka glejowa, naczynia włókien nerwowych nie mających osłonki Schwanna.
