In developmental biology, cellular differentiation is the process by which a less specialized cell becomes a more specialized cell type. Differentiation occurs numerous times during the development of a multicellular organism as the organism changes from a simple zygote to a complex system of tissues and cell types. Differentiation is a common process in adults as well: adult stem cells divide and create fully differentiated daughter cells during tissue repair and during normal cell turnover. Differentiation dramatically changes a cell's size, shape, membrane potential, metabolic activity, and responsiveness to signals. These changes are largely due to highly controlled modifications in gene expression. With a few exceptions, cellular differentiation almost never involves a change in the DNA sequence itself. Thus, different cells can have very different physical characteristics despite having the same genome.

Als Differenzierung (von lat. differe - sich unterscheiden) wird in der Entwicklungsbiologie die Entwicklung von Zellen oder Geweben von einem weniger spezialisierten in einen stärker spezialisierten Zustand bezeichnet. Die Differenzierung ist zusammen mit der Zellteilung verantwortlich dafür, einem mehrzelligen Lebewesen seine Form zu verleihen, die Gesamtheit dieses Prozesses wird als Morphogenese bezeichnet. Differenzierungsprozesse treten einerseits bei der individuellen Entwicklung eines vielzelligen Organismus auf, der sich aus einer Zygote zu einem komplexen Gebilde mit vielen verschiedenen Zelltypen und Gewebetypen entwickelt. Auch in ausgewachsenen Individuen spielen Differenzierungsprozesse wichtige Rollen bei der Aufrechterhaltung der Körperfunktionen.

La différenciation cellulaire est un concept de biologie du développement décrivant le processus par lequel les cellules se spécialisent en un « type » cellulaire. La morphologie d'une cellule peut changer radicalement durant la différenciation, mais le matériel génétique reste le même, à quelques exceptions près.

Celldifferentiering är den process som gör att celler blir olika, trots att de har samma genetiska utgångsmaterial och tillhör samma organism. När äggcellen befruktas sker celldelning och celldifferentiering som leder till olika celltyper. I många flercelliga organismer finns det olika sorters celler, som kan skilja sig väldigt mycket i utseende och funktion. Jämför till exempel en nervcell med en hudcell. Det är ännu inte fullt kartlagt hur celldifferentieringen regleras.

Celdifferentiatie is de overgang van totipotente cellen in een specifiek type cellen. Bij dieren heten de totipotente cellen stamcellen en hebben alleen de eicel en de cellen ontstaan uit de eerste celdelingen het vermogen in alle celtypen te veranderen (totipotentie). Bij planten behouden alle cellen in principe dit vermogen, maar dan is bij de meesten eerst de-differentiatie nodig. Meestal differentiëren alleen de nieuwe cellen die bij het meristeem zijn ontstaan.
