The celesta or celeste is a struck idiophone operated by a keyboard. Its appearance is similar to that of an upright piano (four- or five-octave) or of a large wooden music box (three-octave). The keys are connected to hammers which strike a graduated set of metal (usually steel) plates suspended over wooden resonators. On four or five octave models one pedal is usually available to sustain or dampen the sound. The three-octave instruments do not have a pedal because of their small "table-top" design. One of the best-known works that makes use of the celesta is Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from The Nutcracker.

Die Celesta (pl. Celesten) ist ein Idiophon mit Tastatur in der Form eines Harmoniums. Der Klang einer Celesta ähnelt dem eines Glockenspiels, jedoch mit einem viel weicheren Timbre. Der Name kommt vom französischen céleste, was so viel wie „die Himmlische“ bedeutet. Wie so oft bei Instrumenten ist dies zugleich eine Anspielung auf den Klang des Instrumentes und dessen Symbolik.

Le célesta est un instrument de musique de la famille des percussions, muni d'un clavier. Inventé en 1886 par Auguste Mustel (1842/1919), c'est un hybride entre le glockenspiel et le piano, les marteaux actionnés par les touches du clavier frappant des lames métalliques.

Celesta är ett klaverinstrument med hängande metall- eller glasstavar istället för strängar. Därigenom är den ett slags klockspel som spelas med tangenter i stället för med klubbor. Den har ett omfång från c till c5, men noteras en oktav lägre. Celestan ingår ibland i symfoniorkestern i verk från 1900-talet och senare. Den spelas vanligtvis av en pianist.
