Companion DogsOverview
Cavaliers are gentle, sweet, sporty spaniels that get along with everyone, including children, although they must be treated gently. They demand to be included in all family activities and show their appreciation with abundant kisses.
Cavaliers do well in obedience classes and love praise.
Appearance
The Cavalier's coat is moderately long, slightly wavy, soft, and silky. Color may be rich chestnut on a pearly white background; jet-black on a pearly white background with tan markings; jet-black with tan markings; or solid red.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
Cavaliers need to be combed and brushed weekly. Happy just sleeping on their owners' laps, they also enjoy activities reminiscent of their hunting days--walks in the woods to "point" birds or squirrels, or romps in the backyard with a ball.
Origins
The Cavalier King Charles is descended from the English toy spaniel. The Cavalier King Charles, named for Charles II, was a popular 17th-century ladies' lap companion. It was also used for hunting rabbits and other small game.
