Cat Stevens

Yusuf Islam (born Steven Demetre Georgiou on 21 July, 1948 in London), who was known as Cat Stevens from 1966 to 1978, is an English musician, singer-songwriter, educator, philanthropist and prominent convert to  Islam.Under the name "Cat Stevens", he has sold over 60 million albums around the world since the late 1960s. His albums Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat were both certified by the RIAA as having achieved Triple Platinum status in the United States (three million sales each); his album Catch Bull at Four sold half a million copies in the first two weeks of release and was Billboard's number-one LP for three consecutive weeks. His songwriting has also earned him two ASCAP songwriting awards (for "The First Cut Is the Deepest", which has been a hit single for four different artists.)

Yusuf Islam (* 21. Juli 1948 in London, als Steven Demetre Georgiou) ist ein britisch-zypriotischer Sänger und Songwriter, der unter dem Künstlernamen Cat Stevens bekannt wurde. Seit seinem Übertritt zum Islam im Jahr 1978 heißt er Yusuf Islam, als Künstler nennt er sich heute nur Yusuf. Obwohl er kein Imam ist, gilt er als der einflussreichste britische Muslim.

Cat Stevens, Steven Demetre Georgiu (ur. 21 czerwca 1948 roku w Wielkiej Brytanii) - muzyk brytyjski. Muzyczna kariera Cata Stevensa nabrała rozpędu, gdy spotkał producenta i menadżera Mike'a Horsta. Jesienią 1966 roku jego pierwszy singiel "I love my dog" wszedł na brytyjskie listy przebojów. Niedługo potem przebojem stała się piosenka "Mathew & son". W 1968 roku zachorował na gruźlicę. Do śpiewania powrócił na wiosnę 1969 roku z nowymi piosenkami. Zatrudnił nowego menadżera Barry'ego Krosta. Wydany w kwietniu 1970 roku album "Mona Bone Jakon" był początkiem nowego stylu artysty. Zmieniło się brzmienie i teksty piosenek. Album odniósł sukces w Wielkiej Brytanii i poza jej granicami. Kolejną płytą była "Tea for the Tillerman", a pochodzący z niej utwór "Wild world" stał się największym przebojem Cata Stevensa. Następny album, "Teaser and the firecat" również odniósł sukces. We wrześniu 1972 roku wydał album "Catch bull at four". Wyjechał na Jamajkę, gdzie nagrał album "Foreigner". Po koniec 1977 roku Cat Stevens zmienił wiarę na islam, a nazwisko na Yusuf Islam. Nagrał później płytę "Back to Earth", która była albumem pożegnalnym. W 1983 roku dofinansował powstanie brytyjskiej szkoły dla muzułmanów. W 1995 roku wydał płytę "The life of the last prophet" opowiadającą o podstawach islamu.
