Carl Benz

Karl Friedrich Benz, for whom an alternate French spelling of Carl is used ocassionaly, (November 25, 1844, Karlsruhe, Germany – April 4, 1929, Ladenburg, Germany) was a German engine designer and automobile engineer, generally regarded as the inventor of the gasoline-powered automobile. Other German contemporaries, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, also worked independently on the same type of invention, but Benz patented his work first and, after that, patented all of the processes that made the internal combustion engine feasible for use in automobiles. In 1879 Benz was granted a patent for his first engine, which he designed in 1878.

Karl Friedrich Benz (Carl Friedrich Benz) (ur. 25 listopada 1844, zm. 4 kwietnia 1929), niemiecki inżynier, pionier motoryzacji.Urodził się 25 listopada 1844 w Mühlburgu (obecnie dzielnica Karlsruhe) w Niemczech. Używane są dwie formy imienia Benza: w akcie urodzenia otrzymał wpisane imię Karl, pod takim imieniem otrzymał też patent w 1880 roku. W późniejszym okresie jednak, zgodnie z francuską modą pisowni w języku niemieckim, zaczął używać imienia w formie Carl; pod takim imieniem został mu wydany patent w 1882 roku, a swoją firmę nazwał Carl Benz Söhne KG (Carl Benz i synowie).

Divenuto ingegnere realizzò nel 1878 il primo motore a scoppio a due tempi che ebbe un ottimo successo e che permise a Benz di trovare gli investimenti per fondare a Mannheim nel 1883 una fabbrica di automobili la Benz & Co. All'inizio del XX secolo quest'impianto aveva l'onore di essere il più grande al mondo nel suo campo.
