Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or cellulose gum is a cellulose derivative with carboxymethyl groups (-CH₂-COOH) bound to some of the hydroxyl groups of the glucopyranose monomers that make up the cellulose backbone. It is often used as its sodium salt, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose.

Carboxymethylcellulosen (CMC) sind Celluloseether und als das Derivate der Cellulose, bei denen ein Teil der Hydroxylgruppen als Ether mit einer Carboxymethyl-Gruppe (–CH₂–COOH) verknüpft sind. Die Cellulose wird aus Nadel- und Laubhölzern gewonnen.

Carboxymethylcellulose is een ester van cellulose en azijnzuur. In tegenstelling tot cellulose is carboxymethylcellulose wel oplosbaar in water. Toepassingen worden onder andere gevonden in tandpasta en in verf.
