Canute IV of Denmark

Canute (or Knut) IV (c. 1043 –  July 10, 1086), also known as Canute the Saint and Canute the Holy (Danish: Knud IV den Hellige or Sankt Knud), was King of Denmark from 1080 until 1086. Canute was an ambitious king who sought the English throne, attempted to strengthen the Danish monarchy, and devoutedly supported the Roman Catholic Church. Slain by rebels in 1086, he is now the patron saint of Denmark.

Knut IV. der Heilige (* 1043; † 10. Juli 1086 in Odense) war König von Dänemark.Er war der Sohn von Sven II. Estridsen. 1080 folgte er seinem Bruder Harald III. auf den Königsthron. Er versuchte, die Kompetenzen des Königtums auszuweiten. Durch eine kirchenfreundliche Politik suchte er die Unterstützung der Bischöfe.Einige Quellen behaupten, dass er die Anordnung gegeben habe, die Weihnachtszeit auf insgesamt 20 Tage bis zum 13. Januar, dem so genannten St.-Knut-Tag, zu verlängern.

È anche il santo patrono della Danimarca.Canuto era il figlio illegittimo di Sweyn II Estridsson. Succedette a suo fratello, Harald III. Canuto voleva stabilire una forte autorità reale sulla base di una forte chiesa. Considerava anche che fosse suo il titolo di Re d'Inghilterra, poiché era il nipote di Canuto il Grande, che aveva regnato come re d'Inghilterra, Danimarca e Norvegia dal 1016 fino al 1035. Quando Canuto tentò di forzare i contadini dello Jutland a partecipare in un raid contro l'Inghilterra (e contro il suo governante dell'eoica, Guglielmo il Conquistatore, i contadini portarono avanti un'insurrezione che culminò con la sua morte dentro la Chiesa di St.Alban's a Odense, insieme con suo fratello Benedict e diciassette dei loro seguitori. Nel 1101 fu canonizzato come santo, e nel 1300 lui e suo fratello vennero interrati nella nuova Cattedrale di San Canuto.
