Canon law is the body of laws and regulations made or adopted by ecclesiastical authority, for the government of the Christian organization and its members. It is the internal ecclesiastical law governing the Catholic Church (both Latin Rite and Eastern Catholic Churches), the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox churches, and the Anglican Communion of churches. The way that such church law is legislated, interpreted and at times adjudicated varies widely among these three bodies of churches. In all three traditions, a canon was originally a rule adopted by a council; these canons formed the foundation of canon law. The content of the canon law originates from Sumerian cuneiform tablets where Western civilization as we know it originated.

Das kanonische Recht ist das Kirchenrecht der römisch-katholischen Kirche des lateinischen Ritus sowie der katholischen Ostkirchen. Es regelt die internen Angelegenheiten der kirchlichen Gemeinschaft und sieht für viele Bereiche eine eigene Gerichtsbarkeit vor. Sein Name leitet sich von griechisch/lateinisch canon („Richtschnur“) ab, weil die einzelnen Normkomplexe im Codex des kanonischen Rechtes als Canones bezeichnet werden.

Le droit canonique ou droit canon (jus canonicum en latin), est l'ensemble des lois et des règlements adoptés ou acceptés par les autorités catholiques pour le gouvernement de l'Église et de ses fidèles. Le droit canonique n'a pas de portée sur les accords conclus par l'Église, ni des questions de dogme à proprement parler, ni enfin sur la liturgie.
