Camellia sinensis

Camellia sinensis is the tea plant, the plant species whose leaves and leaf buds are used to produce tea.  White tea, green tea, oolong and black tea are all harvested from this species, but are processed differently to attain different levels of oxidation. The name sinensis means Chinese in Latin. Older names for the tea plant include Thea bohea, Thea sinensis and Thea viridis. Camellia sinensis is native to mainland South and Southeast Asia, but is today cultivated across the world, in tropical and subtropical regions. It is an evergreen shrub or small tree that is usually trimmed to below two metres (six feet) when cultivated for its leaves. It has a strong taproot. The flowers are yellow-white, 2.5–4 cm in diameter, with 7 to 8 petals.

Le théier, ou arbre à thé, ou tout simplement thé, est un arbre originaire d'Extrême-Orient, de la famille des Théacées. Il est largement cultivé pour ses feuilles  séchées et éventuellement oxydées, qui servent à la préparation par infusion du thé. C'est une espèce voisine du camélia horticole, Camellia japonica. Camellia sinensis signifie mot à mot « camellia chinois ».

De theeplant (Camellia sinensis) is een plant die van oorsprong voorkomt in Zuidoost-Azië. De jonge scheuten van deze plant worden gebruikt om thee te produceren. Sinensis is Latijn voor Chinees. Tegenwoordig wordt thee over de gehele wereld in tropische en subtropische gebieden geteeld. Van deze plant worden witte thee, groene thee, oolong en zwarte thee gemaakt. De theeplant is een groenblijvende struik of kleine boom die zo'n 17 m hoog kan worden, maar meestal tot onder de twee meter wordt gesnoeid als het voor de bladeren wordt geteeld. De plant heeft een sterke penwortel. De bloemen zijn geel-wit met een diameter van zo'n 2,5-4 cm met 7 of 8 bloemblaadjes.

Camellia sinensis é uma espécie da família Theaceae, popularmente conhecida como chá. Foi originalmente descrita por Lineu como Thea sinensis, mas este nome caiu em desuso quando notou-se que as espécies de Thea e Camellia não apresentavam diferenças significativas entre si. Esta é uma árvore de até 15 metros de altura nativa das florestas do nordeste da Índia e sul da China. Apesar da altura máxima elevada, as podas constantes evitam que ultrapasse 1,5 metros, e os indivíduos cultivados desta maneira raramente florescem. Possui folhas oblongas, escuras, lustrosas, com nervuras bem marcadas nas superfícies, de margem inteiramente denteada, e as folhas mais novas são cobertas de pequenos pêlos brancos.
