Caligula

(August 31, 12 –  January 24, 41), more commonly known by his nickname Caligula, was the third Roman Emperor and a member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, ruling from 37 to 41 .In general, only some details of his life are known. What is known, however, is that during his brief reign, Caligula focused much of his attention on ambitious construction projects and territorial expansion. He worked to increase the authority of the principate and struggled to maintain his position against several conspiracies to overthrow him. He was eventually assassinated in 41 by several of his own guards in a conspiracy involving the Roman Senate.

Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (* 31. August 12 in Antium; † 24. Januar 41 in Rom), postum bekannt als Caligula, war von 37 bis 41 römischer Kaiser. Caligulas Jugend war von den Intrigen des ehrgeizigen Seianus geprägt. Nach hoffnungsvollem Regierungsbeginn, der durch persönliche Schicksalsschläge getrübt wurde, übte der Kaiser seine Herrschaft zunehmend als autokratischer Monarch aus und ließ in Hochverratsprozessen zahlreiche Senatoren in willkürlicher Ausschöpfung seiner Amtsgewalt zum Tode verurteilen. Seine Gewaltherrschaft endete mit seiner Ermordung durch die Prätorianergarde und Einzelmaßnahmen zur Vernichtung des Andenkens an den Kaiser.

Le fonti storiche pervenute lo hanno reso noto per la sua stravaganza, eccentricità e depravazione, tramandandone un'immagine di despota. L'esiguità delle fonti fa comunque di Caligola il meno conosciuto di tutti gli imperatori della dinastia. Fu assassinato da un gruppo delle sue guardie.
