Calabaza
See Calabasas for the city in California Calabaza (or Calabasa, Kalabasa in tagalog) is a variety of squash commonly eaten in Latin America, the Philippines, and the Caribbean. It grows to about the same size as a pumpkin, with a green or yellow skin color and a yellowy-orange flesh. It is akin to summer squash or zucchini found in more northerly climates. The name should not be confused with a calabash). First cultivated for food in pre-hispanic Mesoamerica as one of the "three sisters" of squash, maize, and climbing beans (typically tepary beans or common beans). From Mesoamerica, it is believed to have spread to other regions via Spanish colonial influence.
