Cactoblastis cactorum, commonly known as the Cactus Moth, South American Cactus Moth, or Nopal Moth, is native to Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. It is one of five species in the genus Cactoblastis that lives in South America. The native habitat of South America is home to many parasitoids and pathogens that control the growth of the moth. This species has been introduced to many areas outside its natural range including to Australia, the Caribbean and South Africa In some places this has led to its uncontrolled spread and its classification as an invasive species, and yet in other places such as Australia it has been used as a biological control against cacti of the genus Opuntia and is treated almost as a biological hero.

Cactoblastis cactorum is een nachtvlinder uit de familie Pyralidae, de snuitmotten. De vlinder heeft cactussen uit het geslacht Opuntia als waardplant. Het wijfje zet op deze planten staafjes met 70 tot 90 eitjes af op de cactus, die doen denken aan de stekels van een cactus. Na 25 tot 30 dagen komen de eitjes uit. De rupsen boren zich in de cactus en vreten hem van binnen helemaal leeg. Als de rupsen volgroeid zijn, komen ze weer uit de cactus, en verpoppen op de grond tussen de plantenresten. De nieuwe imago's gaan op zoek naar een nieuwe plant.
