Cañizares rose to prominence with a heroic display on his international debut in a 1993 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Denmark. Taking the field after the first-half dismissal of Andoni Zubizarreta, he kept a clean sheet as 10-man Spain hung on for the 1-0 win that secured their passage to USA ’94. After so long in the shadows of Zubizarreta, he now faces stiff competition from Molina for the number one goalkeeper’s jersey. Cañizares started out in the youth ranks of Real Madrid CF but it was as a Celta de Vigo player that he established himself in Spain’s top flight. He later returned to Madrid but a less-than-happy stay at the Bernabeú resulted in a move to Valencia CF. A solid presence in Valencia’s goal during their progress to the UCL final of 99-00 season.
