COBRA

A cobra is a venomous snake of family Elapidae, of several genera, but particularly Naja. (Non-cobra elapidae include the taipans, brown snakes, tiger snakes, fierce snakes, coral snakes, mambas, and sea snakes.) Cobras generally inhabit tropical and desert regions of Asia and Africa.

COBRA (or CoBrA) was a European avant-garde movement active from 1949 to 1952. The name was coined in 1948 by Christian Dotremont from the initials of the members' home cities: Copenhagen (Co), Brussels (Br), Amsterdam (A).COBRA was formed from an amalgamation of the Dutch group Reflex, the Danish group Høst and the Belgian Revolutionary Surrealist Group. The group held two large exhibitions, one at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1949) and the other at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Liège (1951). The primary focus of the group consisted of semiabstract paintings with brilliant color, violent brushwork, and distorted human figures inspired by primitive and folk art and similar to American action painting. Cobra was a milestone in the development of Tachisme and European abstract expressionism.

Le nom Cobra désigne plusieurs espèces de serpent venimeux, notamment du genre Naja ou encore plus communément, une espèce des Indes, le serpent à lunettes. C'est cette dernière que l'on associe au fakir charmeur de serpents, dans l'imagerie populaire. Les Cobras peuvent être très venimeux.

CO.BR.A fu un movimento artistico d'avanguardia europeo attivo dal 1949 sino al 1953. Il nome fu coniato nel 1948 da Christian Dotremont , facendolo derivare dalle iniziali del nome delle città dei vari componenti: Copenaghen, Bruxelles, Amsterdam.CO.BR.A venne formato dalla mescolanza dal gruppo Reflex fiammingo , dal gruppo danese Høst e dal gruppo belga "Revolutionary Surrealist Group". Il gruppo tenne due grandi esibizioni: una al Stedelijk Museum ad Amsterdam nel 1949; la seconda al Palais des Beaux-Arts a Liège nel 1951 La principale caratterista del gruppo CO.BR.A risiede nella pittura semiastratta, utilizzando colori molto brillanti, violente pennellate e figure umane distorte, ispirate all'arte primitiva, molto simile all'Action Painting americano. Questo gruppo è considerato una pietra miliare dell'Espressionismo astratto europeo.
