Comic Book Archive file
Comic Book Archive file or ComicBook Reader File is a type of
archive file for the purpose of sequential viewing of images, especially comics. Comic Book Archive files consist of a series of image files archived in
ZIP,
RAR, or more rarely
TAR file formats with the
filename extension renamed to .cbz, .cbr and .cbt respectively. Advantages of these file formats include a simplified file viewing and maintenance experience. The idea was made popular by the
CDisplay image viewer. CBZ/R/T files typically contain
PNG or
JPEG files. Occasionally
GIF,
BMP, and
TIFF are seen. In many operating systems, the filename extension largely determines which application a file is opened with. By renaming files between the filename extensions, traditional archiving software can be used to create Comic Book Archive files and to extract image files. The first comic produced specifically for this format was
Saturn Knight, released in August 2006 by
Jim Shelley and Pierre Villeneuve.
