Carp is a common name for various freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae, a very large group of fishes that dominates the fish faunas of Eurasia and North America. Some consider all cyprinid fishes carp and the family Cyprinidae itself is often known as the carp family. In colloquial use, however, carp usually refers only to several larger cyprinid species such as Cyprinus carpio (common carp), Carassius carassius (Crucian carp), Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp), Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (silver carp), and Hypophthalmichthys nobilis (bighead carp). Carp have long been an important food fish to humans as well as popular ornamental fishes (see koi and goldfish). As a result, carp have been introduced to various locations.

Le terme carpe est un nom vernaculaire utilisé pour désigner des poissons d'eau douce de la famille des Cyprinidae. Ce terme est ambigu car il peut désigner génériquement l'ensemble de la famille, voire de l'ordre. En France, en Belgique et au Canada carpe désigne plus particulièrement la carpe commune, il n'en est pas de même dans d'autres pays francophones où ce terme désigne aussi d'autres espèces parmi les perciformes comme des Kuhliidae, des Anostomidae, des Cichlidae (des tilapias), et même des poissons de mer, des Lutjanidae aux Seychelles et en Afrique de l'Ouest dont les dont les "carpes rouges".

Karp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) - ryba z rodziny karpiowatych. Jest jedną z najważniejszych ryb hodowlanych. W Polsce stanowi połowę odławianych ryb słodkowodnych. Na świecie odławia się ok. 200 tys. ton karpia rocznie. Przez wędkarzy uważany za rybę waleczną i przebiegłą.Występowanie: forma dzika występowała pierwotnie w Europie południowo-wschodniej i zachodniej Azji w zlewiskach mórz Egejskiego, Czarnego, Kaspijskiego i Aralskiego. Na skutek hodowli, której początki notowano we wschodniej Europie ok. XII i XIII w. oraz introdukcji został rozprzestrzeniony na terenie niemal całego świata. W warunkach naturalnych przebywa w wodach stojących lub wolno płynących. Występuje niemal we wszystkich strefach klimatycznych. Siedliskiem karpia są stawy, jeziora nizinne, w cieplejszych okresach występują w płytkich przybrzeżnych wodach, natomiast w chłodniejszych przy dnie.

J.A. Carp's garenfabrieken is genoemd naar de grondlegger. Het was een groot industrieel bedrijf (textielfabrikant) in het zuiden van Nederland met name tussen 1900 en 1970.De geboren Amsterdammer Jacob Arnoud Carp (1809-1895) associeerde zich na zijn huwelijk met de dochter van de Helmondse kasteelheer en zijn vestiging daar in 1848 met George Wilhelm Kaulen die een bescheiden turksroodververij exploiteerde. In 1860 scheidden hun wegen en zette J.A. Carp onder eigen naam een eigen nieuw bedrijf op. Zijn turksroodververij in Helmond importeerde ruwe garens, vnl. uit Engeland, verfde deze en exporteerde ze vervolgens weer naar het Verre Oosten, vooralnamelijk naar Nederlands-Indië. Hier werd het garen vooral gebruikt voor de weven van sarongs. Het was een ambachtelijk proces en het bedrijf was redelijk kleinschalig. Daarnaast waren JA Carp en zijn zoon Carel Frederik Carp (1842-1885) nog actief in de Geldropse textielnijverheid, waar zij van 1856 tot 1886 een stoomwolspinnerij en -weverij exploiteerden.

De eigenlijke of echte karpers behoren tot de familie van 'cyprinidae'. Deze bestaan uit zoetwatervissen en is met meer dan 2000 soorten de grootste vissenfamilie. De belangrijkste kenmerken zijn:Het ontbreken van een maagGemodificeerde kieuwbogen in de keel voorzien van tanden (keeltanden). Deze zijn specifiek voor elke soort of hybride en zijn een belangrijk determinatiekenmerk.Het ontbreken van tanden op de kaken.
