Automobile
An automobile (from Greek auto, self and Latin mobile moving, a vehicle that moves itself rather than being moved by another vehicle or animal) or motor car (usually shortened to just car) is a
wheeled passenger vehicle that carries its own
motor. Most definitions of the term specify that automobiles are designed to run primarily on roads, to have seating for one to eight people, to typically have four wheels, and to be constructed principally for the
transport of people rather than goods. However, the term is far from precise because there are many types of vehicles that do similar tasks.

Une automobile est un
véhicule terrestre léger, à
roues, propulsé par un
moteur embarqué dans le véhicule. Ce type de véhicule est conçu pour le
transport sur
route de
personnes, mais sa définition peut s'étendre jusqu'au transport de
marchandises ainsi que jusqu'à des véhicules pouvant fonctionner sur tout terrains. L'étymologie du mot explique cette variété de définitions, puisque le terme provient du
latin mobilis (qui bouge) et du
grec auto (soi-même), ce qui réfère donc surtout à son caractère auto-propulsé, qui distingue l'automobile de la
voiture.

Das Automobil oder kurz Auto (von
griechisch , autó~ – selbst~ und
Latein mobilis – beweglich, früher Motorwagen) ist ein selbstfahrendes
Fahrzeug, das sich unabhängig von
Schienen und ohne den Einsatz von
Zugtieren selbständig und aus eigenem
Antrieb an Land fortbewegen kann. Die Definition schließt motorisierte Zweiräder mit ein. Im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch steht das Wort meist für mehrspurige Fahrzeuge, welche sich auf
Straßen fortbewegen. Oft ist auch nur der
Pkw, nicht aber der per Definition auch zur Gruppe der Automobile gehörende
Lkw gemeint.
