Byzantium

Byzantium (Greek: Βυζάντιον) was an ancient Greek city, which, according to legend, was founded by Greek colonists from Megara in 667 BC and named after their king Byzas or Byzantas (Βύζας or Βύζαντας in Greek). The name "Byzantium" is a Latinization of the original name Byzantion. The city is what later evolved to be the center of the Byzantine Empire, (the Greek-speaking Roman Empire of late Antiquity and the Middle Ages) with the name Constantinople. After the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire, the city became known as Istanbul to the Ottoman Turks, but that didn't become the official name of the city until 1930.

Byzance (en grec ancien  / Byzántion, en latin Byzantium) est une ancienne cité grecque, capitale de la Thrace, située à l’entrée du Bosphore sur une partie de l’actuelle Istanbul. La cité sera reconstruite par Constantin et, renommée Constantinople en 330 ap. J.-C., elle deviendra la capitale de l’Empire romain, puis de l’Empire romain d'Orient.

Byzantion (altgriechisch Βυζάντιο[ν], latinisiert Byzantium, modern Byzanz, türkisch Bizans) ist eine um 660 v. Chr. gegründete Koloniestadt dorischer Griechen aus Megara, Argos und Korinth. Sie lag am südwestlichen Ausgang des Bosporus, auf der östlichen Spitze einer Halbinsel zwischen Marmarameer und Goldenem Horn. Aufgrund seiner ausgezeichneten Lage wurde Byzantion 326 bis 330 vom römischen Kaiser Konstantin I. als neue Hauptstadt Konstantinopel (heute Istanbul) umgebaut.

Bizancio (griego antiguo Βυζάντιον, Byzàntion, latín Byzantium ), fue una ciudad griega, capital de Tracia, situada a la entrada del estrecho del Bósforo, sobre una parte de la actual ciudad de Estambul, y que ha ocupado un lugar destacado en la historia desde su fundación.Colonia griega desde la antigüedad, fue refundada por el emperador Constantino I el Grande en 330, y renombrada Constantinopla, fue la capital y el centro de la cultura clásica del Imperio Romano de Oriente o Imperio Bizantino. Corresponde a la actual ciudad turca de Estambul.Durante diez siglos (V-XV) resistió todos las tentativas de conquista de sus diferentes enemigos, hasta que su caída en manos de los turcos otomanos el 29 de mayo de 1453, marcó su fin de ciudad greco-romano-bizantina e inició el de ciudad otomana, con el nombre de Estambul.
