Byzantine Empire

The Byzantine Empire or Byzantium is the term conventionally used since the 19th century to describe the Greek-speaking Roman Empire of the Middle Ages, centered on its capital of Constantinople. The Empire is also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, although this name is more commonly used when referring to the time before the fall of the Western Roman Empire. During much of its history it was known to many of its Western contemporaries as the Empire of the Greeks because of the dominance of Greek language, culture and population. To its inhabitants, the Empire was simply the Roman Empire (Greek: ) and its emperors continued the unbroken succession of Roman emperors. In the Islamic world it was known primarily as (Rûm, land of the "Romans").

Das Byzantinische Reich (griechisch Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορία, offiziell ), verkürzt auch nur Byzanz (griechisch Βυζάντιο[ν]) oder, aufgrund der historischen Herkunft, das Oströmische Reich, war ein Kaiserreich im östlichen Mittelmeerraum. Es entstand in der Spätantike aus der östlichen Hälfte des Römischen Reiches und endet mit der Eroberung von Konstantinopel durch die Osmanen im Jahre 1453. Das Reich erstreckte sich anfangs bis zur arabischen Halbinsel und nach Nordafrika, war aber seit der Mitte des 7. Jahrhunderts auf Kleinasien und den Balkan beschränkt und wurde von der Hauptstadt Konstantinopel (dem heutigen Istanbul) aus regiert.

El Imperio Bizantino —llamado también, sobre todo para hacer referencia a su etapa inicial, Imperio Romano de Oriente— fue un imperio cristiano medieval de cultura griega cuya capital estaba en Constantinopla o Bizancio (actual Estambul). Los orígenes del Imperio Bizantino se remontan a la etapa final del Imperio Romano. Inicialmente abarcaba todo el Mediterráneo oriental, pero con el tiempo fue sufriendo importantes reducciones territoriales.

Bysantinska riket, eller Bysans, är av tradition (från 1500-talet) namnet på romarriket under medeltiden, det vill säga den universella kristna statsbildning som senare fick sitt centrum i Mindre Asien och hade Konstantinopel (dagens Istanbul; från början Byzantion) som huvudstad och som uppstod vid Romerska rikets delning 395 i en västlig och östligt del mellan Theodosius I:s båda söner Honorius och Arcadius och bestod fram till 1453. Under senantiken, i samband med västromerska rikets upplösning (200-400), benämns det bysantinska riket ofta Östromerska riket eller Östrom.
