The state church of the Roman Empire was a Christian institution organized within the Roman Empire during the 4th century that came to be the Empire's sole authorised religion. Both the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church claim to be the historical continuation of this same church. This church emerged as Roman Emperor Constantine established tolerance for Christianity during his reign and established a precedent of imperial involvement in matters of the Christian faith. By the end of the 4th century, Emperor Theodosius had established a single Christian doctrine (the details would be formalized by the first seven Ecumenical Councils) as the state's official religion. The officially sanctioned church would go on to become a key part of the Empire and its identity throughout the Middle Ages. The emperor himself came to be seen as the church's defender and leader, along with the bishops.

Orthodoxe Kirchen (altgr. ορθός ,richtig, geradlinig‘ δόξα ,Verehrung‘ oder δοκείν ,Glaube‘, d. h. die richtige Verehrung oder rechte Lehre Gottes, im Slawischen pravoslavnaja cerkov) nennen sich die christlichen Kirchen des byzantinischen Ritus, bestehend aus mehreren selbstverwalteten Kirchen, welche jeweils geografische, nationale und kulturelle Spezifika aufweisen, jedoch theologisch vereint sind. Angehörige der orthodoxen Kirchen verstehen sich als Einheit und sprechen daher meist von der Kirche der Orthodoxie im Singular. Die orthodoxen Kirchen bilden mit ca. 225 Millionen Angehörigen die drittgrößte christliche Gemeinschaft der Welt.

L'Orthodoxie, en grec Ορθοδοξία, en français, la foi droite (ou christianisme orthodoxe) descend en droite ligne des premières communautés chrétiennes fondées par les apôtres de Jésus dans les provinces orientales de l'Empire romain et comptant quelque 350 millions de fidèles. Elle est organisée en de nombreuses Églises territoriales (et non nationales) qui forment ensemble l'« Église orthodoxe » ou « Communion orthodoxe » fidèle à la théologie des sept conciles du premier millénaire chrétien et au droit canon qui en découle. Jusqu'au schisme de 1054, les Églises d'Occident (Église catholique romaine comprise) aussi furent orthodoxes, c'est-à-dire conformes à la théologie et au droit canon des sept conciles du premier millénaire.
