The stocky midfielder has struggled to live up to the reputation he forged in his teenage years. He was the star of the Turkish Under-18 side that won the European U-18 Championship in 1992, and made his international debut in October of that year, but that was his last senior-team appearance for six years. Part of the reason for that hiatus was a loss of form following a broken leg, but he has recovered fully, and now takes up a regular place on the right wing. Though he was unable to get on the scoresheet himself, he was an able provider with his pinpoint crosses.
