The Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area is the second-largest
metropolitan area in New York, located in the
Western New York region. The Buffalo-Niagara Falls, NY
Metropolitan Statistical Area is defined by the United States Census as
Erie County and
Niagara County; as of 2006 its population is 1,137,520, and its principal cities are considered
Buffalo (24% of the population),
Cheektowaga (8%),
Tonawanda (6%) and
Niagara Falls (5%). The broader Buffalo-Niagara-Cattaraugus, NY
Combined Statistical Area also includes the Olean, NY
Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is contiguous with
Cattaraugus County, and under this definition the metropolitan population is 1,219,054.
