Buddhism is a religion and philosophy indigenous to the Indian subcontinent and encompasses a variety of traditions, beliefs, and practices largely based on teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, who is commonly known as the Buddha (meaning "the awakened one" in Sanskrit and Pāli). The Buddha lived and taught in the eastern part of Indian subcontinent some time between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE. He is recognized by Buddhists as an awakened or enlightened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end ignorance (avidyā), craving (taṇhā), and suffering (dukkha), by recognizing dependent origination and sunyata, and attain Nirvana.

Sie ist je nach Quelle mit weltweit etwa 230 bis 500 Millionen (nach Christentum, Islam und Hinduismus) die viertgrößte Religion der Erde. Buddhism eller Buddha Dharma (Buddhas väg) är ett praktiskt levnadssätt och en religion med ursprung i Indien. Buddhismen grundades för cirka 2500 år sedan av prins Siddhartha Gautama av Shakyaklanen. Prins Siddhartha nådde under intensiv meditation i Bodh Gaya, en liten ort söder om Gaya i Bihar, något som beskrivits som uppvaknandet eller upplysningen och blev genom detta känd som en Buddha, en som nått perfekt kunskap.

Buddyzm (inna nazwa to: sanskr. Buddha Dharma; pāli. Buddha Dhamma – "Nauka Przebudzonego") – religia, system filozoficzno-etyczny, rzadziej psychologia. Założycielem tej religii i twórcą podstawowych jej założeń był, żyjący od około 560 do 480 roku p.n.e. Siddhārtha Gautama (pāli. Siddhattha Gotama), syn księcia z rodu Śākyów, władcy jednego z państw-miast w północnych Indiach.
