Félix de Avelar Brotero (1744–1828) was a Portuguese botanist and professor. He fled to France in 1788 to escape persecution by the Inquisition, and there published his Compendio de Botanica in order to earn his living. It immediately established his reputation as a botanist, and upon his return to Portugal in 1790 he was given the chair of botany and agriculture at the University of Coimbra. His two best known works, Flora lusitanica, 1804, and Phytographia Lusitaniae selectior, 1816–1827, were the first lengthy descriptions of native Portuguese plants. As director of the botanical gardens at Coimbra (see Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra) and Ajuda (Lisbon), he reorganized and enlarged them.

Brot (ahd. prôt) ist ein traditionelles Nahrungsmittel, das aus einem Teig aus gemahlenem Getreide (Mehl), Wasser, einem Triebmittel und meist weiteren Zutaten gebacken wird. Es zählt zu den Grundnahrungsmitteln. Das feste, dunkle Äußere des Brotes heißt Kruste oder Rinde. Das Innere ist die Krume. Brotkrümel heißen auch Brosamen (aus dem Mittelhochdeutschen) oder Brösel. Die meisten Brotteige können in Form kleinerer, etwa handtellergroßer Portionen als Brötchen gebacken werden.

Flottning eller timmerflottning var förr ett vanligt sätt att transportera timmer i strömmande vattendrag från skogarna i inlandet till gruvor nerströms och sågverk, som ofta låg vid kusten. Timret fick följa med det strömmande vattnet i älvar, åar och bäckar och i mindre strömmande delar av vattendragen samlades timret ihop i stora flot( även kallat timmernot) och spelades eller bogserades till ställen där strömmen kunde ta det vidare. Vattendrag som användes till flottning benämndes flottningsleder eller flottleder. Flottningen avslutades vid ett så kallat skilje där sorteringen skedde, det vill säga att timret sorterades efter ägare.

Félix de Avelar Brotero (Santo Antão do Tojal, Loures, 25 de Novembro de 1744 — Belém, Lisboa, 4 de Agosto de 1828) foi um botânico português. Em sua homenagem foi fundada a Sociedade Broteriana, agremiação científica que através do seu Boletim teve grande importância no desenvolvimento da Botânica em Portugal.
