Britpop is a subgenre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom. Britpop emerged from the British independent music scene of the early 1990s and was characterised by bands influenced by British guitar pop music of the 1960s and 1970s. The movement developed as a reaction against various musical and cultural trends in the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly the grunge phenomenon from the United States. In the wake of the musical invasion into the United Kingdom of American grunge bands, new British groups such as Suede and Blur launched the movement by positioning themselves as opposing musical forces, referencing British guitar music of the past and writing about uniquely British topics and concerns. These bands were soon joined by others including Oasis, Pulp, Supergrass, Sleeper and Elastica.

Britpop ist eine aus Großbritannien stammende Musikbewegung, die Anfang der 1990er Jahre entstand und sich durch eine Rückbesinnung auf die Traditionen britischer, gitarrenlastiger Rock- und Popmusik auszeichnet. Eine der beiden wichtigsten Quellen ist dabei der britische Independent der späten 1980er Jahre mit Bands wie The Stone Roses oder The Smiths. Allerdings zielt der Britpop im Gegensatz zu diesen Bands auf ein breites Publikum und bedient sich deswegen ebenfalls der Größen der Pop-Musik der 1960er Jahre, wie The Beatles, The Kinks oder The Rolling Stones. Die bekanntesten Vertreter des Britpop sind Blur, Radiohead, Coldplay und Oasis. Letztere haben sich bis heute als eine der erfolgreichsten Bands in der Rockszene etabliert, wie sich z. B. auf ihrer letzten Welttour 2005/06 zeigte, wo sie Stadien mit bis zu 80.000 Fans füllten. Weitere Vertreter sind The Verve, Pulp, Suede, Supergrass und Ash.

Le sentiment que les groupes dédiaient leur bande sonore à la nouvelle génération des jeunes Britanniques était très présent. Incroyablement populaire auprès des jeunes entre 1994 et 1996, il a été d'autant plus critiqué par son manque d'innovation.

Ett stort antal olika pop- och rockmusikaliska stilar har under åren klumpats ihop under detta paraply, men den ”ursprungliga” britpopen kan förenklat beskrivas som en blandning av 1960-talets gitarrpop (The Kinks, The Who, tidiga The Bee Gees, Small Faces, The Beatles), punk och new wave (The Clash, The Jam, Sex Pistols) och det tidiga 1990-talets brittiska indie (Ride, My Bloody Valentine, The Stone Roses).
