British and Irish Lions

For the Great Britain Lions rugby league football team of similar title, see Great Britain national rugby league team The British and Irish Lions (until 2001 known as the British Isles Rugby Union Team or more colloquially the British Lions) rugby union side comprises a pick of the best players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Rugby union circles refer to these four international Rugby Unions collectively as the "Home Nations" and therefore sometimes refer to the Lions team as a "Home Nations" team. Lions selectors can also draft uncapped players available to one of the four home unions, but in recent years this has rarely occurred.

I British and Irish Lions (conosciuti sino al 2001 come British Isles Rugby Union Team o, più familiarmente, the British Lions) sono una selezione di rugby a 15 che comprende i migliori giocatori di Inghilterra, Scozia, Irlanda e Galles. Queste nazioni, vengono riferite nel mondo del rugby come le ‘’Home Nations’’ e talvolta ci si riferisce ai ‘’Lions’’ come il team delle ‘’Home Nations’’.

De British and Irish Lions is een invitatieteam van rugbyspelers. Voor het team komen de beste spelers van Engeland, Schotland, Wales en Ierland in aanmerking. Voor de spelers is selectie voor de Lions een grote eer, vaak nog groter dan een plaats in hun nationale team.Het team speelt geen competitie, maar gaat regelmatig op tournee op het zuidelijk halfrond, naar een van de sterke rugbylanden Zuid-Afrika, Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland. Meestal bestaat een toer uit wedstrijden tegen sterke lokale teams en drie tests tegen het gastland.
