The British Empire was the largest empire  in history and for a substantial time was the foremost global power. It was a product of the European age of discovery, which began with the maritime explorations of the 15th century, that sparked the era of the European colonial empires. By 1921, the British Empire held sway over a population of about 458 million people, approximately one-quarter of the world's population. It covered about 36.6 million km² (14.2 million square miles), about a quarter of Earth's total land area. As a result, its legacy is widespread, in legal and governmental systems, economic practice, militarily, educational systems, sports (such as cricket, rugby and football), and in the global spread of the English language. At the peak of its power, it was often said that "the sun never sets on the British Empire" because its span across the globe ensured that the sun was always shining on at least one of its numerous colonies or subject nations.

L’Empire britannique établi par le Royaume-Uni fut pendant près d'un siècle la première puissance économique, politique, culturelle et scientifique mondiale. Il a souvent été décrit comme la première  hyperpuissance mondiale, principalement en raison de son hégémonie et de son étendue. À son zénith, dans les premières décennies du , il comptait une population de 400 à 500 millions (environ le quart des humains) et s’étendait sur des territoires couvrant 36,6 millions de km (environ le quart des terres émergées), s'établissant ainsi comme l'empire le plus vaste de l'histoire.

Das Britische Imperium (engl. British Empire, alternativ auch Britisches Weltreich genannt) war die größte Kolonialmacht der Geschichte mit Kolonien auf allen Kontinenten. Die vom Vereinigten Königreich beherrschten Gebiete umfassten im Jahr 1921 ein Gebiet von über 37 Millionen km², etwa ein Viertel der von Land bedeckten Erdoberfläche. Die Gesamtbevölkerung betrug ca. 500 Millionen (rund ein Viertel der damaligen Weltbevölkerung).

Imperium brytyjskie – potoczne określenie Wielkiej Brytanii i Irlandii wraz z koloniami i innymi terytoriami zależnymi monarchii brytyjskiej, które łącznie stanowiły w swoim czasie największe imperium w dziejach ludzkości. Od 1876 r. także nazwa własna jako Imperium Brytyjskie, gdy królowa Wiktoria przyjęła tytuł cesarzowej Indii. Na początku XX wieku imperium było zamieszkane przez ok. 400-500 mln ludzi (liczba ta była zmienna), co stanowiło blisko 1/4 populacji świata. Imperium rozciągało w okresie swojej największej ekspansji na powierzchni prawie 30 mln km² (w przybliżeniu 1/4 powierzchni świata). Imperium brytyjskie tworzyło się przez około 300 lat w wyniku ekspansji handlowej, działalności osadniczej lub podbojów monarchii brytyjskiej. Jego tereny były porozrzucane po wszystkich kontynentach świata, przez co uzyskało miano "imperium nigdy niezachodzącego słońca". Największe czasy świetności tego mocarstwa przypadały na ostatnią dekadę XIX oraz na początek XX wieku.

L'Impero Britannico fu la prima superpotenza mondiale; nel 1921 dominava su una popolazione di 400 - 500 milioni di persone (circa un quarto della popolazione mondiale) e misurava circa 36 milioni di km², circa il 40% delle terre abitabili, e poco di più del secondo impero mondiale per estensione, l'Impero Mongolo, che al suo apice misurava quasi 35 milioni di km².
