British Raj (raj, lit. "reign" in Hindi) was the British rule in the Indian subcontinent between 1858 and 1947. The term can also refer to the period of dominion. The region under British control, commonly called India in contemporary usage, included areas directly administered by the United Kingdom (contemporaneously, "British India") as well as the princely states ruled by individual rulers under the paramountcy of the British Crown. After 1876, the resulting political union was officially called the Indian Empire and issued passports under that name. As India, it was a founding member of the League of Nations, and a member nation of the Summer Olympics in 1900, 1920, 1928, 1932, and 1936.

Britisch-Indien (alternative Englisch/Sanskrit Bezeichnungen: British Raj und ab 1876 Indian Empire) war die Bezeichnung für die von 1858 bis 1947 unter direkter britischer Kolonialherrschaft stehenden Länder des indischen Subkontinents bzw. das heutige Indien, Pakistan, Bangladesch. Von 1886 bis 1937 war auch Birma (heute Myanmar) Teil Britisch-Indiens. Darüber hinaus unterstanden der britisch-indischen Verwaltung auch einige Stützpunkte auf der arabischen Halbinsel, besonders Aden.

Le Raj britannique est la dénomination non officielle de la période de domination britannique du sous-continent indien, c'est-à-dire la zone géographique s'étendant sur les pays suivants : l'Inde, le Pakistan, le Sri Lanka, le Bangladesh et la Birmanie.

Brittiska Indien skapades som en besittning under den brittiska kronan genom beslut i det brittiska parlamentet den 2 augusti 1858. Beslutet trädde i kraft 1 november samma år. Dessförinnan hade förvaltningen av de brittiska territorierna i Indien varit anförtrodd Brittiska Ostindiska Kompaniet.

Po przejęciu władzy na Półwyspie Indyjskim bezpośrednio przez parlament brytyjski, rząd brytyjskiego gubernatora-wicekróla zmuszony był do realizacji szerokich reform gospodarczych. Wydano szereg ustaw w zakresie socjalnych warunków pracy, m.in. wprowadzono w zakładach pracy jeden dzień w tygodniu wolny od pracy i zakaz zatrudniania dzieci poniżej dziewięciu lat. W odpowiedzi na liczne rozruchy w miastach i bunty chłopskie, wydane zostały ustawy ograniczające lichwę i możliwość usuwania chłopów z ziemi. Zrezygnowano też z zamiarów chrystianizacji miejscowej ludności.
