Brahmaputra River
The Brahmaputra is a
trans-boundary river and one of the major
rivers of
Asia.From its origin in southwestern
Tibet as the
Yarlung Tsangpo River, it flows across southern Tibet where it is known as
Dihang to break through the
Himalayas in great gorges. It flows southwest through the Assam Valley as
Brahmaputra and south through
Bangladesh as the
Jamuna. There it merges with the
Ganga to form a vast delta. About 1,800 mi (2,900 km) long, the river is an important source for irrigation and transportation. Its upper course was long unknown, and its identity with the Yarlung Tsangpo was only established by exploration in 1884-86. This river is often called Tsangpo-Brahmaputra river.

Asie du sud, long de kilomètres, prenant sa source à m d'altitude, dans la chaîne
himalayenne des Kailas, au glacier Kubigangri, près de
Lhassa. C'est le Dyardanes ou l' Œdanes des
Grecs anciens. Son parcours tropicale font de la vallée de ce fleuve un des plus riches site mondial en
biodiversité. Ses crues importantes permettent une fertilisation du sol, mais provoquent des catastrophes importantes. Dans son cours inférieur qui est sacré pour les
hindous, le fleuve est largement employé pour le transport des produits agricoles.

W górnym biegu Brahmaputra przyjmuje liczne potoki wypływające z najwyższych masywów himalajskich, co powoduje to, iż na długim, przeszło 1000 km odcinku ma ona charakter rzeki górskiej. Płynie początkowo w kierunku wschodnim, po czym, po opłynięciu masywu Namjagbarwa Feng, skręca gwałtownie na południe. Opuszczając
Himalaje wpływa na
Nizinę Hindustańską. Od tego momentu przyjmuje charakter rzeki nizinnej, rozlewając się na dużą szerokość. W letnim okresie monsunów poziom rzeki podnosi się o 10-12 metrów.
