In legal history, a bote, also spelled bot or bót, was a compensation, recompense, or amends. It is the source of a variety of other terms, including the following: manbote, which is amends paid to a lord for a servant who was killed; boteless, where no judgment or favor will acquit someone, as would be the case for sacrilege; fire-bote, house-bote, hedge-bote, plow-bote, etc. It is also the source of the common phrase to boot.

Unter einem Bot (vom Begriff robot abgeleitet) versteht man ein Computerprogramm, das weitgehend autonom ständig gleichen, sich wiederholenden Aufgaben nachgeht. Es handelt sich dabei meist um ein eher simples, aber effektives Programm. Gebräuchlich ist die Bezeichnung auch für quasi-selbständige Programme im Bereich der künstlichen Intelligenz.

Nelle terminologie legate a Internet, il termine bot (abbreviazione di robot) si riferisce, in generale, a un programma che accede alla rete attraverso lo stesso tipo di canali utilizzati dagli utenti umani (per esempio che accede alle pagine Web, invia messaggi in una chat, e così via). Programmi di questo tipo sono diffusi in relazione a molti diversi servizi in rete, con scopi vari ma in genere legati all'automazione di compiti che sarebbero troppo gravosi o complessi per gli utenti umani.
