[Image:US Secession map 1865.svg|thumb|In this map: ]]The term border states refers to the five slave states of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, and western Virginia which all had a common border with NorthernUnion states. In some of these states, there were both pro-Confederate and pro-Union governments, factions and men (sometimes even from the same family) that fought as soldiers on opposite sides in the American Civil War.
