Book of Revelation

The Book of Revelation, also called Revelation to John or Apocalypse of John, (literally, apocalypse of John; Greek, Αποκαλυψις Ιωαννου, Apokalupsis Iōannou) is the last canonical book of the New Testament in the Bible. It is the only biblical book that is wholly composed of apocalyptic literature. Other apocalypses popular in the early Christian era did not achieve canonical status, except for the 2 Esdras (Apocalypse of Ezra), which is canonical in the Russian Orthodox and Ethiopian Orthodox Churches.

Die Offenbarung des Johannes - oft auch Apokalypse genannt - ist das letzte und einzige durchgehend prophetische Buch des Neuen Testaments. Es beschließt den Kanon der christlichen Bibel. Diese Schrift richtete sich an sieben im Römischen Reich verfolgte christliche Gemeinden in Kleinasien im östlichen Hinterland von Ephesus, die von der Mission des Paulus von Tarsus theologisch geprägt waren. Sie will deren Mitglieder ermutigen, den römischen Kaiserkult abzulehnen und der Wiederkunft Jesu Christi als Endrichter zu vertrauen. Dabei griff der Autor auf die in der Heilprophetie Jesajas und im Buch Daniel vorgegebene Bildersprache der jüdischen Prophetie und Apokalyptik zurück. Diese Trost- und Hoffnungsschrift wird seit dem Mittelalter in 22 Kapitel unterteilt.

Apokalipsa Świętego Jana [Ap], Księga Objawienia, Objawienie Jana [Obj] (gr.  – Objawienie Jana) – jedyna prorocza księga Nowego Testamentu opisująca zagładę świata i powstanie "Nowego Świata" zanim nastąpi jego koniec i Sąd Ostateczny. Apokalipsa zawiera bardzo liczne odwołania do Starego Testamentu. Tradycja za autora uważa Jana Ewangelistę (choć nie jest to pewne, a eschatologia księgi różni się od eschatologii Ewangelii Jana). Powstanie datuje się na okres prześladowań Chrześcijan w Azji Mniejszej (a więc po roku 68) i najprawdopodobniej powstawała w różnych etapach.
