BookCrossing is defined as "the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise". The term is derived from bookcrossing.com, a free online book club which began and encouraged the practice. Bookcrossing.com's stated goal is to "make the whole world a library".

Le Bookcrossing, autrement appelé BC ou BX, est un phénomène mondial que l'on peut apparenter à Wheresgeorge, à Eurobilltracker, à WheresWilly, au géocaching, aux cistes ou plus récemment au postcrossing pour les cartes postales. Il s'agit ici de faire circuler des livres en les libérant dans la nature pour qu'ils puissent être retrouvés et lus par d'autres personnes, qui les relâcheront à leur tour.

Bookcrossing (inaczej nazywana uwalnianiem książek, krążeniem książek, lub książkokrążeniem) - idea nieodpłatnego przekazywania książek najczęściej poprzez zostawianie ich w specjalnie oznaczonych miejscach, by ktoś mógł je zabrać, przeczytać i znów zostawić w tym samym lub innym wyznaczonym do tego miejscu.

Il BookCrossing anche noto come BC , giralibri, liberalibri, Libri liberi, Libri in libertà, consiste nella pratica di una serie di iniziative collaborative volontarie, e completamente gratuite, di cui alcune anche organizzate a livello mondiale, che legano la passione per la lettura e per i libri alla passione per la condivisione delle risorse e dei saperi. L'idea di base è di rilasciare libri nell'ambiente naturale compreso quello urbano, o "into the wild", ovvero dovunque una persona preferisca, affinché possano essere ritrovati e quindi letti da altre persone.
